Virginia Climate Center

Building a Climate-Ready Virginia

The Virginia Climate Center (VCC) brings together climate science, communication, and community expertise to help Virginians understand climate risks and prepare for a changing climate.

Based at George Mason University, VCC works with communities, decision-makers, and partners across the Commonwealth to turn trusted climate information into practical knowledge that supports resilience.

Connecting Climate Science with Virginians

Climate change is already affecting communities across Virginia — but the risks, needs, and solutions look different from place to place.

VCC connects Mason’s climate expertise with the needs of Virginians, providing locally relevant information and working alongside communities to better understand climate impacts and identify opportunities to prepare and adapt.

As a collaborative Mason initiative, VCC brings together expertise across disciplines, including Mason 4C’s decades of research on how people understand and communicate about climate change.

How VCC Puts Climate Learnings to Work

Z

Understanding Virginia's Changing Climate

The Virginia Climate Center develops and shares credible, Virginia-specific climate information, data, and assessments that help people understand current and future climate risks.

Z

Connecting Science & Communities

VCC works with communities and decision-makers to identify the climate information they need and translate research into useful, actionable knowledge.

Virginia Climate Assessment

Led by the Virginia Climate Center, the Virginia Climate Assessment brings together the best available science to examine how Virginia’s climate is changing and what those changes mean for people, communities, infrastructure, natural resources, and the economy.

The assessment gives Virginians a shared foundation of trusted, locally relevant information to understand climate risks and plan for the future.

Virginia State Climate Office

The Virginia State Climate Office, housed within VCC at George Mason University, provides weather and climate data, analysis, assessments, and expertise to support communities, businesses, researchers, and state and local decision-makers across Virginia.

Together, the Climate Office and VCC strengthen the Commonwealth’s capacity to understand changing conditions and use climate knowledge to inform decisions.

A Collaborative Approach to Climate Resilience

VCC brings together researchers and experts from across George Mason University and works with partners throughout Virginia to connect climate science, communication, and community knowledge. That collaborative approach helps ensure climate information isn’t simply produced but reaches the people who need it in forms they can understand, trust, and use.
