About Mason 4C

Understanding climate communication. Inspiring informed action.

The George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication (Mason 4C) advances the science and practice of climate change communication. Since 2007, we’ve combined rigorous social science research with real-world partnerships to help trusted voices communicate climate change more effectively, strengthen public understanding, and support equitable climate solutions.

A Think-and-Do Tank

Unlike traditional research centers, Mason 4C doesn’t stop at publishing research. We work alongside journalists, health professionals, educators, community leaders, policymakers, and organizations to translate evidence into practical tools, partnerships, and programs that create real-world impact.

Our work connects research, communication, and action — helping trusted voices make climate science more understandable, relevant, and meaningful for the people they serve.

Mason 4C’s four-step approach to climate communication: 1. Research—understand how people think about climate change. 2. Insights—turn evidence into practical communication strategies. 3. Trusted Voices—equip and empower trusted messengers. 4. Impact—build understanding and support informed action. The process then cycles back to research.

From Evidence to Impact

Mason 4C’s strength is not any one step in this process—it’s the connection between them. Our researchers work alongside practitioners and partners to understand what people need, test what works, and put those insights into practice. What we learn through our programs and partnerships, in turn, helps inform new questions and future research.

This ongoing exchange between research and practice allows us to develop climate communication strategies grounded in evidence, shaped by real-world experience, and designed to make a difference.
